The role of our Kaiwhakatere Rangatahi is to ensure that our rangatahi are steering their lives in a right (tika) direction whilst being their support to stay afloat on their journey.

Barry Van Beek: Kaiwhakatere Rangatahi - Team Lead
Ngāpuhi
Barry grew up Riverton and now lives in Invercargill with his wife and two children. He brings 16 years of experience - guiding and supporting people to build new paths in their lives. Barry enjoys his role as it gives him an opportunity to “assist rangatahi on their journey to adulthood, guiding them towards opportunities and working together to fulfil their potential.”

Ngāi Tahu
Born and raised in Te Waipounamu, Kai spent 16 years of his adolescence and early adulthood in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Wellington. During his time there, Kai began his career working with youth in schools as a teacher aide, kapa haka tutor, basketball coach, relief teacher, and youth mentor. Kai has since returned to Murihiku to continue his work supporting rangatahi as they navigate their paths into the wider world.
Shaun Taane: Kaiwhakatere Rangatahi
Ngāti Maniapoto
Shaun was born in Hamilton but now lives in Invercargill with his wife, three children and mokopuna. He brings 22 years’ experience supporting and uplifting whānau to achieve positive changes. Shaun enjoys his role supporting rangatahi on their journey into adulthood and plays a vital role in rangatahi imagining the future they desire and supporting them on the pathway to achieving that.

Key Foci
The Kaimahi work with rangatahi and whānau to understand their aspirations and help them make their pathway happen.
1. Tutaki
Building trust and relationships with rangatahi by ensuring we get to know them and their whakapapa.
2. Wananga ki te anamata
Working with rangatahi to develop their sense of direction and purpose and develop or build on their pathway plan.
3. Whakahono
Walk alongside rakatahi to broker their pathway, including building connections with employers, education and training, and other supports needed for their pathway to be realised.
